The Department for Regional Development (DRD) Roads Service intend carrying out railing refurbishment and replacement on Duke Street, Londonderry during January and February.
The funding for this project has been provided by the Department for Social Development (DSD). The investment is part of a wider programme of work by DSD and DRD to present the city in the best possible light for UK City of Culture 2013.
The works will entail the removal of some stretches of railings, the replacement of other stretches of railing with a stone wall and repainting of the remaining railings.
A number of temporary traffic management arrangements will be in place on Duke Street and surrounding streets from 4 January 2013 to allow these refurbishment works to be carried out.
The scheme will be carried out in two phases.
Phase 1 will include the repainting of the railings on the underpass to the lower deck of Craigavon Bridge and will involve traffic management in the form of one way closures on Duke Street underpass carriageway.
To facilitate this work access to Duke Street for Waterside bound traffic from the lower deck of Craigavon Bridge will be closed in the a.m. peak periods to facilitate traffic travelling into the city. Access to the lower deck of Craigavon Bridge from Duke Street will be closed to City Centre bound traffic in the p.m. peak periods to facilitate traffic travelling out of the city. Diversion routes will be sign posted.
Lane width reductions on Duke Street will also be necessary during Phase 1 of the works.
The duration of the works on Phase 1 will take approximately four weeks to complete at which stage Phase 2 will commence. This will require temporary traffic management in the form of lane closures on Duke Street, Duke Street Roundabout and part of Waterside Link.
The works are expected to be completed by 8 March 2013.
