The Mayor of Derry City has welcomed news that work on the new Bay Road to Boomhall Greenway is set to begin as part of the City's Active Travel Programme funded by the Department for Regional Development.
Mayor Cllr Kevin Campbell said the investment is welcomed to extend the existing city wide greenway network, the use of which is benefiting all the citizens of the city.
He said: "Derry City Council put forward proposals to create new traffic free greenways to enhance accessibility between schools, businesses, parks and residential areas to make cycling and walking within the city an attractive option for everyone, while promoting healthy living and social well being. The scheme will complement the success of other Greenway projects which have been tremendous in enhancing cycling and walking opportunities for everyone."
John Kelpie, Strategic Director Derry City Council confirming the plans said: "The appointed contractor Lagan Construction Ltd will commence works on the site this week and will have the works substantially complete by March 2013. This project will endeavour to open up increased city wide access provision and offer a direct link from the Culmore Road to the Peace Bridge and beyond."
