Ulster Unionist Social Development spokesperson, Michael Copeland MLA has expressed his concern at the sharp increase in people presenting themselves as homeless to the Housing Executive.

Mr Copeland said: "There has been a sharp increase in the amount of households presenting themselves as homeless to the Housing Executive. The number has risen by 878 to a total of 5,047 compared to the same quarter in 2011.

"Most notable is the rise in the amount of people finding themselves homeless as a result of losing their job or a family breakup.

"I have concerns over the effect the proposed 'bedroom tax' will have on the already increasing homeless figures. Given the limited opportunities for downsizing in Northern Ireland, many people stand to be placed in a very difficult position."
