SDLP MLA for Mid-Ulster Patsy McGlone and Chair of the Enterprise Trade and Investment Committee has criticised the decision by gas supplier Airtricity to raise gas prices by 8.7%.
Mr McGlone said: "The announcement by Airtricity that its natural gas prices will increase by 8.7% from 1 April this year will be deeply concerning for consumers and businesses alike. It means that consumers face an increase of almost £1 per week which is a hike that puts further pressure on household budgets.
"This is an increase that comes at a time when people can least afford a further squeeze on their living standards. Fuel poverty among many elderly and vulnerable people in our communities is a very real issue and sees many families turning their heat off to save money.
"I would urge the regulator to reconsider their approval of this decision by Airtricity. In particular the justification that Airtricity have made that the adjustment is due to an increase in gas costs must be fully scrutinised so that hard-pressed consumers and businesses are not unduly penalised."
