Labour Deputy John Lyons, has welcomed the confirmation from Dublin City Council that it has started servicing boilers in its properties area-by-area across the city, after Deputy Lyons highlighted residents' concerns about waiting up to two years to have their boiler serviced.
Mr Lyons said: "I have spoken with many residents in City Council properties who have been waiting up to two years for their boilers to be serviced. This has been happening even though these council tenants told me they pay €3 a week towards the annual servicing of their boiler. I made it my business to have Dublin City Council address this issue as residents have real concerns about the efficiency and safety of their boilers.
"The City Council informed me that up to now they did service boilers in their properties, but unfortunately some residents had to wait longer than a year.
"To get independent advice on this situation, I spoke to Bord Gais about their recommendations for boiler servicing. They informed me that although it depends on the manufacturer, a boiler should generally be serviced once a year. This keeps the boiler working safely and efficiently - which is what residents want and pay for each week.
"I then spoke to Dublin City Council to stress the need to have annual boiler servicing in line with the advice given by Bord Gais. The City Council took on board my concerns and have told me that they have now started an area-by-area servicing schedule of boilers in their properties across the city. I thank the council for responding to these concerns and I will be informing local residents about the servicing schedule in my area once it is confirmed."
