Belfast City Council has donated £200k towards a redevelopment of the Northern Ireland Hospice.
The hospice said the contribution was a "catalyst" in helping improve its facilities to meet its fundraising targets.
The decision by the council's Strategic Policy and Resources (SP&R) Committee was supported from local political parties.
On a visit to the hospice, the Chair of the council's SP&R committee, Councillor Deirdre Hargey, and Lord Mayor Alderman Gavin Robinson were told of plans to build the new hospice at the Somerton Road site.
An Education and Resource Centre would also be erected at the site.
Professor Dame Judith Hill, CEO of the NI Hospice, said: "This contribution is a catalyst to help us meet our target. We need to secure £3 million from a public appeal to build the new hospice and, as a local charity caring for local people, this donation means so much. It will ensure we continue to provide hospice services in the future."
