The Green party is calling for Dún Laoghaire/Rathdown to amend the County development plan to comply with An Bord Pleanála ruling.
An Bord Pleanála's decision last week to refuse planning permission for a major commercial development at Carrickmines supports the direction given by then Minister for the Environment John Gormley in 2010, according to the Greens.
Councillors in Dún Laoghaire/Rathdown had voted to reverse the order made by John Gormley against the scale of proposed retail development in the area. The Minister acted, when Councillors designated Carrickmines as a larger retail centre, against the planners' advice.
The application was rejected last week on the grounds that it did not comply with the Regional Planning Guidelines and the Retail Strategy for the Greater Dublin Area based on issues surrounding traffic and urban sprawl. The Green Party is now calling on the council to amend the County Development Plan, so that it complies with Regional Planning Guidelines and the Retail Strategy for the Greater Dublin Area.
Green Party Planning Spokesperson Tom Kivlehan commented: "Developer led planning from compliant councillors significantly contributed to our economic disaster. If Councillors in Dún Laoghaire continue to heed to developer’s demands, we are destined to repeat the mistakes of the past. They now need to admit they were wrong and amend the 2010 development plan, so that it complies with the most basic planning and sustainability rules."
