Fine Gael Meath East TD, Helen McEntee, has welcomed the approval of €200,000 in funding for the development of the Irish Military War Museum at Starinagh in Collon, saying it will make a huge difference to the local tourist attraction.
The funding is being made available under the Rural Development Programme.
She said: "I met with William Sullivan, the man behind the project, following this announcement and he is absolutely delighted with the funding, which will help to secure the future of his incredible collection of military memorabilia. He has very ambitious plans for the development of the museum over the next five years, and he deserves to be commended for his determination about the project.
"Once completed, the 20 acre museum will include tearooms and a playground, and William also has plans to install World War I trenches and an obstacle course. He is determined to make this a hands-on experience for everyone who visits the museum, and I wish him all the best with his endeavour.
"William previously worked very closely with my dad on bringing the project to this stage, and this funding through the Rural Development Programme should hasten the building phase. I have no doubt that this will become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region. As well as acting as a draw for visitors, the museum will also provide local children with a fascinating insight into our military history."
