SDLP Regional Development spokesman John Dallat speaking in the debate on Funding for A5 Western Transport Corridor insists money from A5 would be better spent in the North West on A6 and on the Dungiven bypass.
Mr Dallat said: "The funds intended for the A5 is more than just simple money. The available funds now presents us with a unique opportunity to invest in our road infrastructure and provide further investment into the West. The A6 project is now ‘shovel ready’ and the Minister of Regional Development Danny Kennedy needs to act now.
"We have been told by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment Arlene Foster, she cannot direct inward investors where to locate their factories or businesses. But we know that those investor’s decisions are based on the quality of the infrastructure, roads and railways. The Minister of Regional Development Danny Kennedy needs to fast-track this project using the A5 funds, which unfortunately can’t now go ahead in the short term. This investment is key is in order to boost the local construction industry, create jobs and draw business to the area.
"The A6, the A26 and the A32 are vital routes, connecting East to West and are in urgent need further investment to cut the journey time of commuters and those transporting goods."
