Limerick City Council is continuing to investigate an incident on the Abbey/Shannon Rivers where it appears that a storm water pipe has been contaminated with fuel oil.

The Council's Environment Department is dealing with the spill by re-locating the oil absorbent booms that were deployed yesterday at Sarsfield Lock to the Lock Quay area. A large quantity of blue oliophilic cloths (which absorb hyrdrocarbon liquids) have also been placed into this area.

Limerick City Council Water Services are investigating the underground drainage network with a view to identifying a possible point of ingress for the contaminants after which corrective action will be taken.

The booms and cloths will remain in place and the situation will continue to be monitored over the coming days.

There is no evidence of any distressed wildlife in the area and the close proximity of clean water means that all wildlife is in a position to avoid the boomed area and any contaminants.
