Energy Minister Arlene Foster has launched important research on consumer experiences of switching energy supplier in Northern Ireland.
Welcoming the publication of the Consumer Council Northern Ireland report, 'Power to Switch', Arlene Foster said: "In recent weeks, there have been a series of announcements of significant increases in electricity tariffs for domestic consumers.
"This followed a more modest increase in retail gas prices in Greater Belfast earlier in 2013. I am acutely aware of the impact of high energy prices for consumers, particularly vulnerable customers and those in fuel poverty.
"Competition in the energy supply markets offers opportunity for consumers to shop around to source the best available deals. However, consumers need to be sure that the process of switching supplier is simple and effective, and that they are given relevant information to help them make choices. It is therefore pleasing to note that the Consumer Council's 'Power to Switch' report finds that the consumer experience of switching has been positive."
Consumer Council research shows that, on average, consumers using oil spend an estimated £637 per year than the average gas consumer.
