The Laois Grouped Towns Sewerage Scheme 'Design-Build-Operate' (DBO) contract has been signed.
The contract was awarded by Laois County Council to the Response Engineering / Ward & Burke joint venture. The scheme involves the construction of five new wastewater treatment plants to cater for the next 20 years. The new treatment plants will be constructed in Abbeyleix, Stradbally, Durrow, Rathdowney, and Mountrath. The tender price was €11,439,642 for the Design-Build works and is being funded by the Department of the Environment, Community & Local Government under the Water Services Investment Programme (2010 -2013).
Being a DBO contract, the Contractor will operate the completed treatment plants on behalf of Laois County Council for a 20 year period. The new treatment plants will ensure that wastewater from each of the towns is treated to very stringent effluent standards which are rigorously monitored by the Environmental Protection Agency.
