Fine Gael Roscommon/South Leitrim TD, Frank Feighan, has said he will work closely with the Minister for Health, James Reilly TD, to secure funding for a rehabilitation unit planned for Roscommon Hospital.
Mr Feighan said: "Proposals for capital funding for this project are currently being prepared and I will impress upon Minister Reilly the need to secure funding for a multi-million euro development which will cater for patients from Roscommon and across the Western region. The unit will be a satellite centre supporting the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dublin.
"Due to the range of specialist therapy to be provided, staffing requirement will be extensive so a significant number of jobs will be created as a result.
"The National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin is the only comprehensive rehabilitation facility in the Republic for patients with physical and cognitive impairments. However, there are no dedicated rehab units in the West and I have highlighted the serious deficiencies in these services with the Minister Reilly.
"Minister Reilly is aware of the need to address these shortcomings and the National Rehabilitation Hospital also fully supports the development of regional rehabilitation services. Thankfully, progress is being made and I look forward to the pending appointment of a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine, to be based at Roscommon Hospital."
