Coleraine Bridge Works To Begin

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy announced the start of a £395,000 Bridge parapet replacement scheme on Sandelford Bridge on the A29 Ring Road in Coleraine.

The work is due to begin on Sunday 21 July 2013 on the bridge which is located between the Strand Road and Lodge Road roundabouts and is expected to last for ten weeks.

The Minister said: "The existing sub-standard parapet railings are being replaced with new 1.5metre high parapets. Some minor repairs to the bridge deck and movement joints will also be completed. The improvements will include increased protection for pedestrians and cyclists as well as increased containment for cars and lorries."

To help minimise any inconvenience to the travelling public and local businesses the majority of this work is programmed to be completed using lane closures on either or both sides of the dual carriageway, as well as occasional weekend overnight closures of both lanes of one side of the bridge.

Lane closures will commence on Monday 22 July and continue until Saturday 28 September 2013 and traffic will be restricted to one lane. However on four occasions during the contract it will be necessary to close both lanes in one or other direction over the bridge to facilitate the placing and removal of temporary barriers. These closures will take place during nights at the weekend and will necessitate diverting traffic through Coleraine town via the Old Bann Bridge.

The scheme is expected to be completed on 29 September 2013.
