Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy announced the start of a scheme costing £56,000 to provide a footway on the B39 Seven Mile Straight at Ballymather Lower, approx five miles south east of Antrim town.
It will extend from the existing footway south of the Loanends Primary School to connect with the footway south of the C26 Long Rig junction, a length of approximately 800m. The work is due to begin on 29 July 2013 and is expected to last for six weeks.
The Minister said: "This scheme will extend rural footway provision and enhance safety for pedestrians along an increasingly busy traffic route providing safer links to local facilities including the Primary School, Church, and bus stop at Loanends."
