Greens Deliver Playground Rubbish To NAMA

The Green Party has delivered playground rubbish to NAMA and called for greater transparency on who is responsible for managing unfinished estates.

Joe O'Brien, the Green Party representative for the Balbriggan Ward, delivered a bag of refuse from the Moylaragh estate in Balbriggan to the office of NAMA.

He said: "Responsibility for management of the estate is uncertain as the local Council have not taken it in charge and have cited NAMA for a failing to provide funding for the clean up. NAMA are at the same time claiming they do not have ownership of the asset and have no responsibility for cleaning up the estate playground, where the rubbish is a real problem.

"It is simply not acceptable that any playground is knowingly left in such a state, regardless of the legal wrangling of who exactly has legal responsibility for the clean up.

"Rather than wait for the powers that be to sort out the legalities, I felt it was important to take away the worst of the rubbish and deliver it to CEO of Nama, Brendan McDonagh at their offices in Dublin 2 with a demand to sort out the maintenance of the playground.

"The first phase of the public consultation of the new Open Government Partnership (1) met in Dublin this week. One of the real problem areas that was identified at that meeting was the lack of transparency regarding environmental information relating to NAMA's portfolio of assets."

"That transparency issue has been stuck in the courts (2) for the last two years and this local example shows how the lack of clarity around environmental obligations is having a real affect on local communities across this country."

NAMA said that "the property in question does not secure any loans supplied by NAMA".

The firm continued: "This has already been explained to Mr O'Brien."
