Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has visited Magherafelt to mark the completion of revitalisation work in the town centre.

The Northern Ireland Executive, through the Department for Social Development, provided £250,000 for a series of revitalisation projects in Magherafelt which were delivered by Magherafelt District Council. An initial project enabled businesses and property owners in Queen Street to make improvements to brighter the streetscape and make the retail core more attractive to customers and visitors.

A separate project focused on the promotion and marketing of Magherafelt with the installation of free Wi-Fi across the town centre, the development of a smart phone application and the development of a specialty food market.

Minister McCausland said: "At the launch of the Masterplan last year, I said this was the beginning of a new, vibrant and exciting future for Magherafelt. This project has undoubtedly helped deliver this by making the most of new technology and ensuring that the retail offering in Magherafelt is marketed throughout the area.

"The town has been brought it into the modern age through the provision of free Wi-Fi and the development of a smart phone application.

"I am also pleased to announce £37,500 funding towards the public art project which will be developed in consultation with the community and other funders and provide a gateway feature for Magherafelt."
