A new Quality Assurance Scheme, being launched by the Irish Petrol Retailers Association (IPRA), will ensure that motorists are receiving legitimate clean fuel which will make life harder for criminals, according to Louth Labour TD Gerald Nash.
Mr Nash said: "Participating garages must be prepared to sign up to random and independent testing to ensure that their fuel meets official government specifications. On passing the tests their names will be listed on the www.ipra.ie website. Customers will also be able to check, via a smartphone app, which garages have signed up. It's a very simple scheme but I believe it will be very effective.
"Fuel laundering is a scourge in our society. It destroys our environment, wrecks cars, steals from the taxpayer and provides a ready income to criminals, many of whom are associated with republican paramilitaries. I have raised this issue many times and will continue to do so until it is eliminated."
