Architect Believes The Peace Building Centre Will Go Ahead

SDLP MLA for West Belfast Alex Attwod has responded to remarks made by leading architect Daniel Libeskind who has said he believes the peace building and reconciliation centre on the site of the maze will go ahead.

Mr Attwood said: "I met and worked with Daniel Libeskind when I was DSD Minister. He is a great talent. He has authority.

"The SDLP wants to see the Maze site and the entire Maze site developed. But the Maze demonstrates how Sinn Fein and the DUP have driven politics into a dead end. Peter Robinson follows those who shout the loudest. Sinn Fein relentlessly promotes the legitimacy of IRA terror. In this, they both occupy the politics of the past.

"Today the SDLP puts down a firm marker. In the past, when the DUP and Sinn Fein 'make up', it is with some political fix. That is the potential danger again. A new fix - the abolition of the Parades Commission for the re-instatement of the Maze Conflict Centre, presented to Richard Haass and Meghan O'Sullivan with Sinn Fein and DUP saying that will do for now.

"If this is where the DUP and Sinn Fein end up, it will not be a comprehensive ethical approach to the Past or the right approach to parades disputes. That is how politics should be judged and how all parties should judge themselves."
