ESB Reduces Carbon Footprint By Over 30%

ESB, Irelands energy company, has reduced its internal and external carbon footprint by over 30 per cent since 2006, according to its 2012 Sustainability Report published.

The 2012 report sets out progress against ESB's 2008 – 2012 target of reducing ESB's internal and external carbon footprint by 30 per cent against a 2006 benchmark. On both fronts that figure was achieved and exceeded, with a 33 per cent cut in internal carbon emissions and a 34 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions from ESB power stations in the Republic of Ireland.

Significant progress has also been made in respect of reducing water consumption and waste management, and recycling.

Major achievements recorded in the 2012 report include:

• 640 sustainable innovations recorded by staff across 60 locations in Ireland and overseas

• 1.3 TWh of electricity generated from renewable sources from a portfolio of 560MW of renewable energy

• 10 per cent reduction in electricity consumption across ESB premises

• Fuel savings of 190,000 litres delivered in the ESB Networks fleet

• 1,875KM of 10KV electricity network upgraded to 20KV resulting in energy efficiency savings of 19GWh

• 1,150 electric vehicle charge points installed across Ireland

ESB Chief Executive, Pat O'Doherty said: "Our sustainability objectives prioritise the most pressing economic, environmental and corporate responsibility issues facing ESB and all energy stakeholders. ESB's ongoing commitment to the installation of renewable energy generation, the development of smart networks and engagement with customers about their own energy efficiency all contributed to a strong performance in 2012 and support the delivery of an efficient, value for money energy service."
