Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has opened the annual Fuel Poverty Coalition conference at the Park Avenue Hotel, Belfast.
Addressing delegates Minister McCausland said: "Fuel poverty is a very real issue for many people in Northern Ireland, with more than 33,000 households spending at least a quarter of their income on heating and lighting for their homes.
"In April 2011 my Department launched its Fuel Poverty Strategy which emphasised the need for a partnership approach to tackle fuel poverty. For some time now, my department has been working with colleagues across government to ensure this important issue is tackled."
The Minister focused on progress on several key initiatives which are aimed at tackling fuel poverty. He said: "Since 2001 we have spent over £150million on the Warm Homes scheme which has assisted over 117,000 households. The Boiler Replacement Scheme launched in 2012, has already exceeded its first year target, with 8,700 new boilers now installed in homes across Northern Ireland.
"In addition, the results from my department's Affordable Warmth pilot, which is currently underway are also demonstrating much success in supporting those who are most vulnerable. Winter Fuel payments are also in place to provide financial assistance towards the cost of heating homes for people born on or before 5 Jan 1952 who may qualify."
