The school was formed in 2008 following the amalgamation of Mersey Street Primary School, Strand Primary School and Sydenham Infants’ School and has a current enrolment of 319 pupils.
Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony the Minister said: "This is a momentous day for Victoria Park Primary School and I would like to thank the pupils, staff and Board of Governors for their kind invitation and warm welcome.

"The start of construction work represents an investment of £3.59million by my Department in the future of this area and its community. The provision of this new accommodation will ensure Victoria Park is well equipped to deliver the curriculum to the existing pupils and future generations.
"I have placed a significant focus on improving the schools estate so that our children can learn in the best possible environment. Since last year I have given approval to proceed with 40 new projects representing a potential investment of up to £353million. In addition I have allocated £106million to the School Enhancement Project and there has also been funding of almost £50million in schools’ maintenance this year. I will continue to press for additional funds to prioritise this important area of work."
