Equestrian Centre To Be Developed

Fine Gael Cork North West Deputy, Áine Collins, has welcomed the sanctioning of funding to Ballyhoura Development Ltd. of €400,000 for the development of an equestrian centre for adults and children with autism.

The funding is being made available under the Basic Services for the Economy and Rural Population measure of the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013 and is in conjunction with €35,000 from I.R.D. Duhallow for the development of the project.

She said: "St Joseph's, which is based in Charleville, is a fantastic organisation. Giving the green light to Ballyhoura Development Ltd, who look after the Leader funding for that part of Cork North West, is excellent news as it will allow for an equestrian centre and associated development works at Liskennett, Granagh, Co. Limerick to be progressed.

"This centre will focus on improving the lives of those with autism and on giving adults and children an outlet to express themselves and to come into close contact with animals; a process which is thought to have a calming and healing effect on people living with conditions such as autism and Asperger's syndrome.

"The estimated total cost of the project is in the region of €883,000, so this €400,000, together with the €35,000 from I.R.D. Duhallow, will go a considerable way to getting the project firmly off the ground."
