A Co Down scrap vehicle dealer was fined a total of £1,472 for unauthorised waste offences at Newry Magistrates' Court.
Gerald Oliver Byrne (61) of Benagh Road, Mayobridge was charged on four counts under the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997 in relation to waste offences at his scrap vehicle site. These charges attracted a fine of £600. In addition, he was instructed to pay court costs of £25 and £847 compensation in lieu of the waste licence fee that he failed to pay.
During a visit to Mr Byrne's premises in March 2012, officers from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency found quantities of tyres, scrap vehicles and parts being stored without the appropriate authorisations. During subsequent visits in May and August 2012, Mr Byrne failed to comply with an instruction to clear the site. The site has recently been cleared.
