Labour Senator Denis Landy said that a common sense response is required from Irish Water to ensure a continuous supply of good quality water to all citizens across the country.
Speaking at the Environment Oireachtas Committee hearing with Irish Water, Senator Landy made a number of key points concerning both quality and supply of water across the country. He pointed out that 41% of water was being lost through leaks, continuous boil notices were in place in several counties and that, while counties along the Shannon were suffering flooding, large parts of Leinster and Dublin city were without water on a regular basis.
He said: "I have requested John Tierney, CEO of Irish Water, to progress the Garryhinch Reservoir Project at Portarlington and to at least tackle as quickly as possible the supply issue for residents in Leinster and Dublin.
"This would prevent a repeat of the ludicrous situation that occurred in Autumn 2013 whereby our capital city ran out of water for a number of weeks at the height of the tourist season."
