SDLP Foyle MLA Colum Eastwood has welcomed the announcement of a new project to transform the Old Waterside Train Station into an integrated transport hub.
Mr Eastwood said that Transport Minister Danny Kennedy's green light for the refurbishment and expansion of the existing station presents a huge opportunity in the continued regeneration of Derry.
The Minister made the announcement following a consultation undertaken by Translink on proposals for a new rail station in the city.
Mr Eastwood said: "The Old Waterside Train Station is an important part of Derry's built heritage and it is vital that it is central in the creation of a new public transport hub in the city.
"The SDLP in Derry has been heavily involved in lobbying for this great asset to be saved for future generation and kept in public ownership, and it is only fitting that it is to be restored to former glory.
"There is a great opportunity for the creation of an innovative transport hub in Derry which reflects the ambitious spirit of the city's One Plan.
"I have asked the minister to provide more detail on his vision for the newly refurbished facility which he rightly states can assist the regeneration of the city and enhance its vibrancy."
