Over 160 years old and home to North Down Borough Council, historic Bangor castle has made the positive move towards energy efficiency by converting from oil to natural gas.
The decision was made along with a range of initiatives to reduce the building's energy consumption. The castle was chosen as one of nine buildings across the East Border Region to benefit from EU INTERREG IVA funding through the East Border Region Energy Efficiency and Micro-Generation Project.
Raymond Haughey, Energy & Sustainability Manager at East Border Region, said: "The installation of new energy efficient condensing gas boilers will mean a reduction in the CO2 production of the Castle by 10.7 Tonnes per year, operational cost savings of over £7,380 per year and a reduction in the sites thermal energy consumption by almost 40,000 kWh per year.
The building will be one of 9 visitor experiences across the region where members of the public can see the impact of renewable & sustainable technologies and see the figures relating to how these technologies are performing."
