Sinn Féin spokesperson on Arts, Sport and Tourism, Sandra McLellan TD has condemned the decision of Minister Jimmy Deenihan to give the go ahead to Chartered Land's proposal to develop a giant shopping centre in the historical area of Moore Street and its surrounding lanes.
Deputy McLellan has said that the move will see the destruction of the Lanes of History and most of the East side of Moore Street.
She said: "Last week I led a delegation of Oireachtas members to a meeting with Minister Deenihan to discuss the development of Moore Street and to outline our opposition to the planned destruction of the ‘Lanes of History’ associated with the 1916 Rising.
"We outlined our opposition to the Chartered Land plan as it will see the destruction of most of the East side of Moore Street and the historic lanes behind it.
"Members of all parties feel very strongly that this area should not be levelled to make way for a giant shopping centre.
"I condemn this decision by Minister Deenihan in the strongest possible way. He has signed off on the destruction an area of major historical importance to Ireland."
