Ballymun's boiler house, which had been earmarked for demolition as part of the Ballymun Regeneration Project (BRL), is set for a green revamp.

This is due to a successful €3.6m application from Dublin City Council and The Rediscovery Centre, Ballymun to the EU's LIFE+ environment fund.

The funding will see The Rediscovery Centre provide education and training programmes in sustainable development in the retrofitted boiler house. Work is expected to begin before the end of 2014 and will be facilitated by co-funding from the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government.

The Rediscovery Centre, which has been working in Ballymun since 2006, supported by BRL, is a social enterprise dedicated to providing community employment and training through innovative 'reuse' businesses. These use waste and unwanted materials as a resource and raw material for new product design.

Dr Sarah Miller, Ballymun Rediscovery Centre, expressed her delight at the news, saying: "The reuse of the boiler house to create a centre of excellence is in keeping with the central ethos of the Rediscovery Centre which seeks to create value from waste resources.

"The centre will provide an innovative platform for us to demonstrate the benefits of resource reuse and recovery and to deliver further education, training and skills development programmes."
