The Western Health and Social Care Board has approved a business case for the major redesign, which it says improves minor and major injury and paediatric pathways within the department. It will include the provision of a new minor injuries unit, new cubicles dedicated for the treatment of children, increased seating in a redecorated waiting area, the relocation of reception and the provision of additional toilet facilities.

Mr Eastwood described the move as "very welcome".
"This redesign will help to vastly improve the hospital experience for patients and their families who find themselves confronted with the pain, stress and worry of medical emergencies," said Mr Eastwood.
"Any scheme that can help cut accident and emergency waiting times, and provide greater levels of comfort to those in need of emergency medical attention, is very good news for patients.
"The redesign and improved facilities will also be a boost to hard working medical staff."
