Meath Senator Thomas Byrne has queried why Meath County Council or the EPA have not erected signs at the entrance to Bettystown Beach advising of a 'no swim' advisory due to a possible pollution incident.
Senator Byrne commented: "Many people in Meath were shocked to learn, after they had been to Bettystown beach that a no swim advisory is in place.
"A stomach illness was reported to me last night by someone who used the beach yesterday during the good weather. While there is no definitive connection I am calling on Meath County Council to erect prominent signage advising people of the possible dangers until the advisory is over.
"I am calling for a full Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) investigation into the cause of the failed bacteria tests. I also want to find out why it takes almost two days for test results to come through. The test which proved the harmful levels of bacteria was taken on the 16th and results only came through last evening. A retest was then done last evening and results are expected Friday."
