A new piece of commissioned work by sculptor Alex Pentek has been installed at a location in Cork City. The unveiling coincides with the opening of a new three-storey building at Ashton School in the city.
The work aims to link the subjects of art, nature, mathematics and science together; while the idea behind the piece was created from the discovery that the original building used to be a leaf-covered Georgian family home set on 20 acres of land.
Working with the team at Graepel, a supplier to the architectural and building industry for more than 50 years, Pentek had each 3mm bronze sheet of the structure perforated to a custom pattern and cut to allow the work to become semi-transparent but also remain rigid. Once assembled, and with phosphor bronze piping added along the edge for strength, all valleys and joins were welded with over half a Kilometre of TIG weld.
The work was then bead blasted to preserve the natural bronze colour.
It is understood the sculpture will be further enhanced through the use of LED lighting.
