Protests Held Over Bridge Construction

A protest has been held in Kilkenny city in relation to work being conducted at a bridge site in the area.

According to reports, gardaí attended the scene at around 4am on Friday morning and cordoned off Green's Bridge and a section of Irishtown. It is understood the protest was at the site of a multi-million euro Central Access Scheme that has been proposed by the local authority. Those in opposition to the plans believe scheme will damage the city's medieval heritage.

The protest remained peaceful as around 40 gardaí facilitated the safe passage of construction machinery into the site. No arrests were made.

It is thought work on the site is continuing on Friday – as are the protests.
