Newry and Mourne residents are being urged to recycle more after council officers noticed more recyclable material being thrown into black bins which increases the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Sending black bin waste to landfill cost the rate payer nearly £2 Million pounds in landfill tax last year, according to the local council. This means each household is handing over an estimated £3 every time their bin is collected.

Director of Technical Services and Leisure, Mr Jim McCorry said: "Dumping rubbish in a hole in the ground isn’t just bad for the environment, it threatens to hit the council taxpayer in the pocket unless we cut back.

"It is great to see the effort residents are making to recycle every year however to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill we need to recycle as much as possible in the blue and brown bins."
