Planning officers have overturned a decision by Dublin City Council to allow the facade of the former Bewley's building on Westmoreland Street to be altered, it has been reported.
The building, now partly occupied by TGI Friday's, had previously received permission to remove the decorative windows of the property in order to make way for a new entrance. However, An Bord Pleanála has now overruled the decision and said that the move would impact on the structure, which is protected. It would also damage the integrity of the architectural conservation area and set an "undesirable precedent" for any similar projects in the local area, it added.
The building, located close to Temple Bar, is now occupied by Starbucks, the Fleet Street Hotel, and TGI Friday's restaurant. Bewley's closed its doors in 2004. Its Westmoreland Street premises first opened in 1896.
