Building Work Begins On Waterfront Extension

Construction work has begun on the extension to the Waterfront in Belfast.

The £29.5 million extension will double the Waterfront's existing conference and exhibition space.

Belfast City Council is providing £11m towards the work with £14.4 million funding from the EU Sustainable Competitiveness Programme, and £4.1 million from the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.

Councillor Lee Reynolds, Chairman of Belfast City Council's Strategic Policy and Resources Committee, which is responsible for delivering the Investment Programme, said: "Over the next 18 months, this project will create 220 construction jobs and 29 full-time posts, in addition to our existing staff, whose hard work and dedication has already made Belfast Waterfront an award-winning conference venue of choice."

The construction work is scheduled to be complete by December 2015.
