Minister Urged To Provide Funding To Refurbish Library

The Minister for the Environment and Local Government is being urged to provide funding to refurbish the new library in Portlaoise.

Fianna Fail TD Sean Fleming raised the issue with Minister Alan Kelly in the Dáil on 5 November, and the Minister replied by saying that funding under the Libraries Capital Programme is fully committed to existing projects.

Laois County Council bought the Old Shaws Department Store for use as a new library, but funding is required to upgrade the building and make it suitable for the thousands of people who will want to use the facility.

Deputy Fleming is calling on the Minister to ensure that there is adequate funding in the 2015 Libraries Capital Programme not just for existing projects, but also to allow new projects including Portlaoise to proceed in 2015.
