Irish Water has confirmed an emergency upgrade for the water supply in Carraroe, Co Galway.
Sinn Fein's Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh said he met with senior management from the firm following media reports Carraroe had failed the last five EPA tests due to an extremely high level of Trihalomethanes.
Senator Ó Clochartaigh said: "The executives admitted that there is a very serious issue with the supply at present and announced that they plan to spend €400,000 immediately to do remedial works to upgrade the supply.
"In relation to the second phase of the Casla Regional Water Scheme, they said that they are not in favour of more stand-alone water sources and that they are looking at supplying demand in the region from existing sources in Connemara and Galway. They are examining this at present and said they will make a decision on this in the coming weeks."
