The Government is being accused of failing to implement the Construction Contracts Act within the proposed timeframe.

Sinn Féin TD Peadar Tóibín has today written to the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation outlining his concern.

Mr Tóibín raised the Construction Contracts Act in the Dáil with Junior Minister Ged Nash, who confirmed the Act will not be implemented in full until Spring 2015. He also declined to commit to a specific date.

He said: "It is important to note that the Construction Contracts Bill had the support of all political parties in the Dáil as we all recognised the importance of the legislation to the sector, particularly subcontractors.

"The need to appoint a Chairperson and panel of Adjudicators, and draw up a Code of Practice was understood early into the legislative process, which makes the government's delay all the more frustrating when they cite these actions as a reason for not meeting their own deadlines.

"Let's not forget the government's Action Plan for Jobs 2014 committed to commence the Construction Contracts Act by the end of this year. The Jobs Plan table of actions stated that the Code of Practice would be agreed by the end of March this year. Yesterday Labour's Junior Minister confirmed a draft version of the Code of Practice has yet to be even finalised."
