Part of the College Green in Dublin is to be transformed following approval from the Council.
Cllr Ciarán Cuffe from the Green Party welcomed the news and said it is a "fantastic development" for the people who live in Dublin.
Cllr Cuffe said: "The naysayers who argued against the 'Bus Gate' initiative have already been proven wrong, and the expanded space for other road and footpath users will similarly be seen as a common sense idea in years to come.
"This idea was presented at the Hidden Rooms design conference in City Hall, and the event has already proven itself to be a fantastic mixing pot of new ideas on how we reclaim our city. The benefits of the Council and Government Departments reaching out to the people is there for all to see.
"I invite everyone to come down on the first day that this new system is trialled, and to see the benefits of having a city that puts people before cars."
