Irish Water is to invest €5m in the water supply scheme on Cape Clear in Cork.
The announcement was made by Fine Gael Cork South West TD, Noel Harrington. Mr Harrington met with representatives from Irish Water to discuss the project.
He said: "Irish Water's plan for Cape Clear consists of two phases. An investment will be made to improve water supply on the existing network by replacing the entire 11.5km watermain distribution network.
"This will reduce the frequency of water outages, particularly during the busy summer period when there is greater demand on a more limited water supply. A detailed site investigation has been completed for this project and Irish Water expects to tender for the contract in Quarter 3 of this year.
"The second phase will involve Irish Water identifying a new drinking water source and constructing a new water treatment plant on the island. This project will be subject to a number of environmental assessments and statutory procedures and it is anticipated to have contracts awarded in mid-2016 and construction underway by Quarter 4 of 2016."
