The government has rejected plans to redevelop Moore Street in Dublin.
Government Senators this week refused to support a Fianna Fáil Bill in the Seanad, which had the support of the 1916 Relatives Group, the Save Moore Street Committee and the Moore Street traders.
One Labour and two Fine Gael Senators turned up to speak in the debate and they failed to put forward any alternative proposals to the plan.
Fianna Fail Senator Darragh O'Brien said: "The behaviour of Government Senators during this debate exposed a total lack of commitment to preserving our historical monuments and developing the economy of Dublin city centre.
"The disinterested attitude that we saw from Government representatives during this debate said it all. It is disgraceful that only one Labour representative and two Fine Gael turned up to speak and not one of them put forward a single alternative proposal to this Bill. It is abundantly clear that this Government is just happy for such an important historical site to remain completely neglected while local traders are left out in the cold."
