Fianna Fáil is urging the Transport Minister to allocate funding to upgrade the rail network on the main Galway to Athenry line.
Fianna Fáil TD for Galway West Éamon Ó Cuív has been informed by Iarnród Éireann that it is looking at ways to upgrade the level crossing system, particularly at junctions which do not have automatic gates.
He said: "I have raised concerns about the crossing on the public road at Mountain West, Derrydonnell, Oranmore, which is experiencing increased traffic volumes as a result of additional trains on the Limerick line. I am extremely pleased that Iarnród Éireann is now examining technical and logistical solutions to try and resolve these issues, and management have confirmed that the Derrydonnell crossing is listed for inclusion in the review. However there are concerns about how the work will be funded.
"Minister Paschal Donohoe must ensure that money is made available to carry out this important upgrade work."
