Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) is to replace 200,000 electricity meters over the next two years.
Contractors MD Electrical and KJM Electrical have been selected to carry out the first phase of the project.
KJM Electrical has started work within the Greater Belfast area and MD Electrical will commence work across the country before the end of June. Further phases of the project will be awarded over the coming months, and the project is expected to employ a total of 40 qualified electricians.
Gerard Magee, Head of NIE Market Operations, said: "We are delighted to be starting this challenging project, which will involve replacement of electricity meters in around 25% of homes and small businesses across the country by September 2017."
