The Transport Minister is being urged to act immediately to ensure that landowners along the route of the N84 realignment project receive the compensation they were promised.
Fianna Fáil candidate for Galway West, Councillor Mary Hoade, made the comments following confirmation that the contractors for the works have been appointed.
Councillor Hoade said: "The appointment of Carey contractors is a very welcome development and sees this project take an important step closer. However, all works must be carried out with complete cross-party agreement, and the interests of the landowners cannot be put on the back burner.
"This road realignment will make a huge difference to people travelling between Galway and south Mayo, who are forced to deal with massive traffic backlogs and long delays. The €5m project will not only ease traffic congestion, it will improve safety along the route, and will also bring much needed employment to the area.
"The landowners have played an integral part in the progression of this road realignment and it is incumbent on Minister Paschal Donohoe to ensure that they are adequately compensated. I have sought an immediate meeting with Galway County Council to ensure that agreement on this issue can be finalised without delay."
