The announcement that a new wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is to be developed in Cork has been welcomed by Fine Gael.
The plant is part of the €91m Cork Lower Harbour Main Drainage Project.
TD for Cork North West, Áine Collins, said the plant at Shanbally marks a major upgrading of water treatment in Cork.
She said: "People are now starting to see the benefit of Irish Water as an entity. This kind of investment in Cork's water treatment simply wouldn't have been possible without the extra investment brought about by water charges.
"Last year, Irish Water invested €340 million in improving water and waste water services. This year alone, over €410 million will be invested.
"An added benefit of this project is that it will create 50 jobs during the construction phase which will have a positive knock on effect for the good for the local economy in Cork."
