The Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources is being urged to take action to ensure Ireland will reach its renewable energy targets.
Deputy Michael Colreavy, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, said a lack of a coherent energy strategy has caused Ireland to be behind on its targets.
Deputy Colreavy said: "The forthcoming White Paper on Energy, which is expected in the coming weeks, must give clear guidelines as to how we will approach our energy needs over the next number of years.
"Renewable energy production is obviously a key component of reaching our energy needs. It is important that the government takes an active role in developing renewable energy for the country's needs."
He continued: "Not reaching our 2020 targets will have serious implications for the country, not just from the financial penalties which the public will have to bear, but will also hinder Ireland's potential to create jobs and industry."
