Construction work on the new Metro North in Dublin is to begin in 2021, the government has confirmed.
The work is expected to be complete in 2026.
Labour Party TD Brendan Ryan welcomed the announcement.
Deputy Ryan said: "We needed to get the public finances in order and get people back to work. We are delivering on that and now, with this capital investment programme we can now commit to delivering this much needed piece of infrastructure.
"This is great news for Dublin Fingal which will also see work begin on the extension of the Dart to Balbriggan. Fingal is one of the youngest and fastest growing regions in the country and it has suffered from years of chronic under-investment in capital projects."
