Primary School Receives Funding For Environmental Education Resources

A total of £3,300 funding has been awarded to a primary school in L'Derry to be used to improve the environmental education resources.

The funding to Glendermott Primary School and Nursery Unit was awarded through the DOE's Challenge Fund.

The project entitled 'Glendermott Garden Community' will see the opening up of a disused local woodland site for educational purposes. The funds will also help the school to improve horticultural facilities, so that pupils can learn about where their food comes from.


Minister Mark H Durkan said: "It is tremendous to see people in Derry coming together to produce innovative schemes to enhance their local environment. I commend them for it. Recently I announced that 32 schools and 48 community groups across the North were successful in obtaining Challenge Funding for their projects.

"When I launched the fund, a key requirement for me was that not only would the local environment improve but that there had to be a tangible benefit for the local community. The Derry groups are delivering that in spades. I wish to congratulate Glendermott Primary School on securing this funding, and I commend them for their desire to get their pupils outdoors to learn about the natural environment."
