Sinn Féin has hit out at the Government after it was revealed that County Louth saw an increase of 13.3% in rents since last year.

According to figures by Daft.ie, the rental market throughout Ireland is spiralling out of control and Louth is among one of the regions with the highest rates of inflation in rents.

Louth TD Gerry Adams said: "Rents also rose by an average of 3.2% in Leinster – outside of Dublin – between June and September – with the biggest increases in Louth and Meath.

"The government was warned that its refusal to take firm action to introduce rent certainty measures would encourage landlords to increase rents before any legislation was introduced. The Daft.ie report appears to confirm this.

"Currently there are over 130,000 households in need of housing across the state and there are nearly 1500 children in homeless accommodation in Dublin. These households are living in cramped, damp, under managed, over-priced private accommodation, or sleeping on sofas, spare beds or the floors of their friends and family."
